The Man My Family Still Addresses

This message is for the person you used to be who your family still speaks to, and the fact that every gathering quietly resurrects a man you buried twenty years ago

There is a particular joke and it comes out most years and Emiliano laughs at it every time.

It is about who he used to be. It is affectionate. Nobody in that family is cruel and nobody is trying to hurt him, and the person who tells it best is his older brother, who drove four hundred kilometers to get him out of something in 2003 and has never once mentioned that on purpose.

The joke is not the problem. The joke is the visible bit.

The problem is the whole set of small adjustments that happen around him at every gathering, which nobody would ever admit to and which he can feel like weather. The way a certain subject gets steered. The slight extra attention when he says he will handle something. The fact that he is, at fifty-one, still the one who gets asked twice.

He has been sober twenty-one years. He has raised two daughters. He has held one job for sixteen of those years and been promoted in it three times.

And at that table he is still, in some quiet permanent way, the man he was at thirty.

He does not blame them and I am not going to either. They watched it. Some of them lost things over it. Their picture of him was formed in the worst four years of his life and it was an accurate picture at the time, and the reason it has not updated is not malice, it is that families run on a very old operating system and it takes an enormous event to make one revise anything.

But he leaves those gatherings and it takes him about two days.

And the sentence that arrives on the drive home is not anger.

He is dead and they keep introducing him to my daughters.

You may know that table.

Maybe it is a joke, or a look, or a particular way somebody says your name. And you are not angry, exactly, and it takes you two days.

The Man My Family Still Addresses

What I am not going to hand you

Let me be careful, because there is an easy version of this that would do damage.

I am not going to tell you to correct them. I do not know your family and a stranger arming a man against his own relatives is doing something reckless. Your brother drove four hundred kilometers. That is not a small fact and it should be in the room while any of this is thought about.

I am not going to tell you they are wrong to remember. They were there. Some of them paid for it. Their memory is not an offense.

I am not going to tell you to stop going, or to say something at the next one, or to make anything into a conversation. If there is ever a right moment for that, it will be yours to find and it will not be because an article told you.

What I am going to do is ask where the record is kept, because I think you have been letting one particular set of people hold it.

The burial and who did it

Here is the sentence the whole of this category stands on, and it is worth reading for who is acting in it.

Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.Romans 6:4

We are buried with him. Passive. It is something done to you.

And look at the agent named for the raising: by the glory of the Father. Not by the family's recognition, not by a long enough run of good behavior, not by twenty-one years of evidence.

The burial and the raising both happened in a place your relatives have no access to and were not consulted about.

And the record of who you are is not kept at that table. The written word puts the burying and the raising in His hands with no committee involved, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my paragraph who makes that reach a man two days out from a family gathering.

And you are walking in newness of life whether or not anybody has updated their file. The word makes it the stated purpose of the burial rather than a reward for consistency, and the Spirit bears witness with your spirit rather than polling a room.

The two days

Now let me look at the two days, because that is the cost and I do not think you have priced it.

What happens in those two days is that you go and check. Not consciously. But something in you, having been addressed as him, goes and looks to see whether he is still down there, and the looking takes about forty-eight hours and it happens several times a year.

That is not weakness. It is what a person does when a room insists on a version of them: they go and verify.

But it means the family's operating system has, without anybody intending it, put you on a schedule of exhumations.

And you do not have to go and check after every gathering. The word says Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more, death hath no more dominion over him, and the Spirit is the one who makes permanence hold in a car on a drive home.

And nothing about you is under review. The word says there is now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, and the Spirit supplies that to a man who has been getting asked twice for twenty-one years.

The breakthrough

So let them hold the old file, and stop keeping a copy.

That is the actual move. You cannot make them update it. You are not required to correct it. What you can stop is the private verification, because you have been checking their records against yours after every gathering, and that has meant treating theirs as authoritative.

They are not the archive.

We are buried with him by baptism into death, that we should walk in newness of life. The word makes the walking the point of the burial and puts both in His hands, and the Spirit is the one who makes that hold at a table where nobody has revised anything.

And that went into the ground with Him and it is staying down. The word puts the burial in the completed tense with the Father doing the raising, and the Spirit is the one who makes buried mean buried whatever gets said at a family lunch.

You are not the one who has to guard that grave, and you certainly do not have to open it twice a year to satisfy a joke.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Joke that comes out most years, you are affectionate and you are not the record of who I am. Scripture says we are buried with him by baptism into death, and it was done by somebody who did not consult that table.
  2. Two days of checking after every gathering, get out of this car in the name of Jesus. Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more, and death hath no more dominion over Him.
  3. Lord, You raised Him by the glory of the Father so that we should walk in newness of life. That went into the ground with Him and it is staying down, and I am not the one who has to guard the grave.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
